A New Year’s Blessing

Today in the Roman Catholic Church is the Feast of the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God, which marks the end of the Octave of Christmas. I learned today that the Solemnity of Mary Mother God replaced on January 1st the Feast of the circumcision of Jesus, which, since you asked, is an awful good thing considering that on that day Roman Catholic Priests wear garments adorned with pictures of the Virgin Mary.

Ahem.

One of the readings for that day is from the book of Numbers and while I always expect it to go  “12, 48, 72…” it actually contains one of my favorite New Year’s Day blessing. Here it is, from my family to yours:

The LORD bless you and keep you!
The LORD let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you!
The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace!

Happy New Year!
